Refilling AdBlue takes ten minutes and costs between 13 and 26 € a year on a diesel SUV covering 15,000 km. At a pump for cars, a litre is worth about 1 €; in a canister, 2 €. A 10 litre canister with a spout is enough for most drivers, and no additive is needed.
What does AdBlue do on a diesel SUV?
It turns the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust into nitrogen and water vapour. It is a solution of 32.5% urea in demineralised water, standardised as ISO 22241 and injected upstream of a catalyst known as SCR (selective catalytic reduction). According to carbu.com (in French), it removes up to 90% of NOx, and passenger cars have been fitted with it since 2014.
It is not a fuel additive. AdBlue has its own tank, its own blue cap, and it never goes into the diesel.
Pump at 1 €, canister at 2 €: the 7 October survey
The price of AdBlue is unregulated in Belgium. No official maximum price frames it, unlike diesel, and it depends on no regional rule: only the brand and the packaging make the difference. On the same day we recorded the prices shown by carbu.com for 24 stations in the Liège area, which spills over into Tongeren and Hoeselt, in Flemish Limburg, and the AdBlue shelf at Auto5.
| Where | Packaging | Listed price | Price per litre | Date of the price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Esso (Flémalle-Haute, Amay), Maes (Tongeren), Shell Express (Petit-Rechain) | Pump | per litre | 0.999 € | 7 October 2026 |
| DATS 24, nine stations from Liège to Tongeren | Pump | per litre | 1.095 € | 7 October 2026 |
| Shell Express (Liège, Chênée, Rocourt, Beaufays) | Pump | per litre | 1.366 € | 23 July 2026 |
| Norauto with spout, at Auto5 | 10 l canister | 19.99 € | 2.00 € | 7 October 2026 |
| Norauto or Diframa with spout, at Auto5 | 5 l canister | 11.49 € | 2.30 € | 7 October 2026 |
| TotalEnergies Clearnox, at Auto5 | 10 l canister | 24.99 € | 2.50 € | 7 October 2026 |
| Bardahl anti-crystallisation additive, at Auto5 | 100 ml bottle | 9.99 € | 99.90 € | 7 October 2026 |

Double the price, then. What matters is how many litres are at stake, and the answer deflates the subject: L'argus (in French) gives the Peugeot 3008 BlueHDi a 17 litre tank for about 20,000 km, which is 0.85 litre per 1,000 km. A family driving 15,000 km a year uses 12.75 litres. That comes to 12.74 € at the cheapest pump, 13.96 € at DATS 24 and 25.50 € in 10 litre canisters.
The number that counts: a gap of 12.76 € a year between the pump and the canister.
Nobody crosses a town for 12.76 €. If a pump for cars sits on your route, use it; otherwise the 10 litre canister with spout at 19.99 € listed at Auto5 covers about 11,700 km on that same 3008. The 5 litre canister is the dearer of the two sizes per litre, and it only makes sense if the tank will not take more.

How do you refill AdBlue, step by step?
Allow about ten minutes, engine off.
- Find the blue cap. It sits behind the fuel flap on a Peugeot 3008, under the boot floor on other models. The vehicle manual settles it, and it also gives the capacity.
- Check the product. The ISO 22241 mark must appear on the canister. The TotalEnergies technical sheet (in French) sets the shelf life at 18 months, sealed, between -5 and +30 °C.
- At the pump, check that it is reserved for light vehicles. A truck lane delivers too fast for a car tank.
- Pour slowly, using the spout. Stop at the quantity given in the manual: on the 3008, L'argus puts the maximum top-up at 10 litres.
- Refit the cap and wipe off splashes straight away. As it dries, the liquid leaves deposits around the filler.
- Restart. The warning message clears at the first restart.
| Operation | Equipment | Time to allow | Cost recorded on 7 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 l top-up from a canister | Canister with spout, cloth | 10 min | 19.99 € |
| 10 l top-up at a pump for cars | None | 5 min | 9.99 to 10.95 € |
| 17 l fill at a pump for cars | None | 5 min | 16.98 to 18.62 € |
| Reusable pouring spout | Pointless if the canister has its own | not applicable | 9.99 € |
| Anti-crystallisation additive | Not required | not applicable | 9.99 € per 100 ml |
Four mistakes that cost more than the refill
- pouring AdBlue into the diesel tank: do not start the engine, call a professional, the TotalEnergies instruction leaves no margin;
- using a lorry lane because it happens to be free;
- decanting with an old oil or fuel container, when Yara, one of the major producers, warns that very small traces are enough to damage the SCR system;
- leaving the opened canister in the boot all summer, well above the 30 °C of the technical sheet.
AdBlue warning light: how many kilometres are left?
About 2,400 km on the 3008 according to L'argus, around 2,000 km according to Test-Achats (the Belgian consumer association) for Euro 6 diesels in general. At 15,000 km a year, that leaves close to two months. The dashboard then counts the kilometres down, and at zero the engine will not restart: emissions treatment is part of the type approval, so the car refuses to run without it.
A warning that stays on after a refill, together with the engine light, is no longer a matter of level. Go to the last section.
Does AdBlue freeze in winter?
Yes, at -11 °C. It is usable again once thawed, Yara writes, so a canister forgotten in the garage in January is not lost. Heat harms it more than cold.
Should you buy an anti-crystallisation additive?
No, not by default. At 9.99 € per 100 ml, the bottle works out at 99.90 € a litre, fifty times the price of AdBlue in a canister. We have tested none of these additives and we found no published independent measurement of their effect. The prevention TotalEnergies describes comes down to two free habits, storing the canister in the shade and wiping off splashes. If your SUV's manual or your mechanic prescribes one, follow them.
Faulty tank on a Peugeot, Citroën, Opel or DS: what to do?
The refill is not the real financial risk of AdBlue. Since June 2022, Test-Achats has been collecting complaints from drivers whose sensor reports a nearly empty tank just after a refill, with a message along the lines of "starting impossible in 1,000 km". The association had counted 2,415 of them on 2 February 2024 (in French), mostly on Citroën and Peugeot cars. The repair means replacing the whole tank, up to 1,200 €, plus up to 400 € of labour. Set against the budget worked out above, 1,200 € is 94 years of AdBlue at the pump. In Italy, Stellantis agreed to refund up to 100% of the parts; in Belgium, the authorities first pointed to the European dimension of the case.
What followed is less clear cut. After a formal notice in July 2024, Stellantis opened an online compensation platform to Belgian owners. Test-Achats reported on 14 August 2025 (in French) refusals without explanation and amounts sometimes limited to 30 €, and referred the matter to the FPS Economy (SPF Économie, the federal economy ministry) and the European Commission. Keep the invoices, file the claim on the carmaker's platform before paying if the garage agrees, and report a refusal to the association.
AdBlue does not change a diesel's fate in the low emission zones (LEZ), which sort cars by Euro standard. It adds to the maintenance items specific to diesel, alongside the particulate filter, and it weighs 0.085 cent per kilometre in a running cost that exceeds 60 cents. To compare a diesel with another powertrain, the comparison tool does the sorting.
Frequently asked questions
At an AdBlue pump reserved for light vehicles, found at some DATS 24, Esso, Shell Express or TotalEnergies stations, or with a 5 or 10 litre canister sold in car centres and at filling stations. Avoid truck lanes: their flow rate is set for lorry tanks.
Around 1 € at the pump and 2 € in a canister. Surveyed on 7 October 2026: 0.999 to 1.095 € a litre at stations in the Liège area updated that day, 2.00 € a litre for a 10 litre Norauto canister at Auto5 and 2.50 € for a TotalEnergies Clearnox canister. No official maximum price applies to it.
About 2,400 km on a Peugeot 3008 BlueHDi according to L'argus, around 2,000 km according to Test-Achats for Euro 6 diesels in general. The countdown shows on the dashboard. Once it reaches zero, the engine will not restart until the tank has been refilled.
Do not start the engine, not even to move the car. TotalEnergies advises calling a professional straight away, because the injection system can be damaged. The instruction is the same if diesel has gone into the AdBlue tank.
Eighteen months in its sealed original packaging, between -5 and +30 °C and out of sunlight, according to the TotalEnergies technical sheet. Yara, another producer, says one year. An opened canister that spent the summer in a boot is not worth the risk: it costs less than 20 €.
