First technical inspection of a new car: and then?

First technical inspection of a new car in Belgium: at 4 years in all three regions, then a schedule, a fee and repair deadlines that diverge.

ByDamien C.8 min read

Yes, the first technical inspection (contrôle technique) of a new car takes place at four years, whether you live in Namur, Ixelles or Ghent. You must present it before the fourth anniversary of its first registration. What follows depends on the region: the schedule, the fee and the repair deadline have had nothing in common since 1 September 2026.

Four years everywhere, and the resemblance ends there

Four years. The federal portal belgium.be (in French) sums it up in one line, annually once your car is more than 4 years old, before pointing to the three regions, which have been in charge since the sixth state reform. Flanders writes the same thing on its page on the technical inspection (in French): passenger cars go for the first time before the fourth anniversary of their registration in Belgium.

Our thesis fits in one sentence: that date is the last rule the three regions still share, and the buyer of a new SUV who stops there gets the following eight years wrong. The same car, serviced the same way, will go to the inspection centre four times between its fourth and eleventh birthdays under the Flemish system, and up to eight times under the Walloon or Brussels system.

One detail in passing. The French version of the Flemish page still spoke of an annual inspection on 11 October 2026, six weeks after the reform. Only the Dutch pages are up to date.

What happens after the first inspection, region by region?

Three systems, side by side.

Flanders moved in stages. Since 2024, its recent cars already went every two years; its statement of 17 March 2026 (in Dutch) extends the rule to all passenger cars, the oldest included. Two entry conditions, worth knowing if your SUV is already more than four years old: the inspection must take place from 1 September 2026 onwards, and the previous certificate must still be valid on that day. A certificate that expired in August earns nothing, even if you wait for September. For a car under four years old, that second condition does not apply.

Twelve years of SUV: four visits or eight

The figure that matters: 184.40 €. That is the inspection budget of a petrol SUV bought new and kept until it turns twelve under the Flemish system, at 2026 fees. We redid the count for the other two regions, taking the visits from the fourth to the eleventh anniversary, a green certificate at every visit and fees frozen at their 2026 level.

Petrol SUV bought new, visits from 4 to 11 yearsWalloniaBrusselsFlanders
Fee per visit in 202659.60 €46.10 €46.10 €
Visits at 15,000 km a year674
Budget at 15,000 km a year357.60 €322.70 €184.40 €
Visits at 30,000 km a year884
Budget at 30,000 km a year476.80 €368.80 €184.40 €

Our calculations, from the fees reported by Moniteur Automobile and by RTBF on 8 October 2026 (in French): 59.60 € in Wallonia, 40.90 € base plus 5.20 € for the environmental check on petrol in Brussels and Flanders.

Mileage changes everything in Wallonia and Brussels, nothing in Flanders. At 15,000 km a year, the Walloon SUV shows 60,000 km at four years then 90,000 km at six: it twice obtains a two-year validity, before falling back to the annual inspection at eight years. In Brussels, the six-year ceiling catches it one visit earlier. At 30,000 km a year, the pace of a company car, it passes 110,000 km by its first visit and pays every year in both regions.

The maximum gap, 292.40 € between Wallonia and Flanders, is less than 37 € a year. Nobody picks a region for that. The Flemish gain is counted in half-days: four fewer over the period.

The deadline after a refusal weighs more than a fee. A car refused for a major defect must be presented again within fifteen days in Wallonia and Brussels, within two months in Flanders, where the garage therefore has time to order a part without you driving past the deadline. And a refusal is nothing exceptional: in 2024, out of 2.6 million passenger cars inspected in Flanders, one in five left without a green certificate, according to the figures reported by DATS 24 (in French) on 17 July 2026. Headlights and emission values are among the leading causes. It is also the argument of those who contest the reform: according to Touring, GOCA Vlaanderen (the Flemish inspection centres' federation) and the unions fear an effect on road safety, and Moniteur Automobile takes the example of a car more than ten years old left two years running without an inspection.

Can a Walloon driver have the car inspected in Flanders?

Yes, and this is the most serious objection to everything above: if the centre can be chosen freely, the region would no longer matter. Nothing obliges you to have your car inspected where you live, and a Walloon or Brussels driver who turns up in Tongeren or Halle leaves with a two-year certificate. Touring expected as early as August to see many motorists opt for Flanders, VRT reported on 18 August 2026 (in French), and the Walloon Mobility Minister, François Desquesnes, had warned against "inspection tourism".

The nuance is legal, and it is not settled. According to RTBF, Wallonia has commissioned an analysis of the validity, on its territory, of an inspection passed in Flanders, and Touring calls the situation a potential trap: the Flemish certificate, its spokesperson says, simply does not match the legal reality of the Walloon driver. The police are expected to do no more than read the validity date. An insurer, after an accident, might look more closely.

To avoid: betting on a two-year Flemish certificate for a Walloon SUV more than eight years old, as long as that analysis has not been published. For a car under 110,000 km and under eight years old, the question does not even arise, since Wallonia already grants the two years.

Does a hybrid SUV pay a surcharge?

In Wallonia, no: the 59.60 € fee applies to a combustion car and a hybrid alike, and only the fully electric car drops to 53.40 €. In Brussels and Flanders, the surcharge depends on the fuel, 5.20 € for petrol, LPG or CNG and 15.60 € for diesel. None of our sources details the line applied to a hybrid: ask the centre when you book.

Tow bar, resale, import: three inspections that come before four years

The "first inspection at four years" assumes a car that has neither changed hands nor been modified. Three cases are exceptions, and the first concerns many SUVs.

  • A tow bar fitted after delivery. In Wallonia and Brussels, it requires a specific visit, charged at about 15 to 20 € extra according to Moniteur Automobile. In Flanders, since 1 September 2026, you can tow as soon as you leave the workshop, and the tow bar will be checked at the next periodic inspection.
  • Resale. A two-year-old car sold to a private buyer goes through a used-car inspection: 89.40 € in Wallonia, 74.40 € elsewhere. Flanders abolishes it on 1 January 2027 for a vehicle registered in Belgium with a valid certificate, unless the buyer lives in Wallonia or Brussels. The details are in our article on selling a car without an inspection.
  • Import. An SUV bought in Germany is inspected before its Belgian registration, whatever its age, and the Flemish reform changes nothing there. See importing a car from Germany.

When should you book to avoid a late fee?

Fifteen days before the due date, at least. The reminder letter is not mandatory: not having received it excuses nothing, and the date that counts is that of first registration, printed on the certificate. In Wallonia, lateness costs 10.60 € in the first month, 15.50 € in the second and third, 29.80 € from the fourth to the sixth, then 59.60 €, the price of the inspection itself. The Region announced in 2024 that this penalty is waived if the appointment was requested ten days before the deadline.

A properly serviced four-year-old SUV has little to fear from the visit. Check the lights and tyres the day before. If you are comparing two models before buying, our comparison tool lines up the rest: consumption, boot space and tax.
