Car jump starter: does it work on an electric SUV?

A car jump starter also revives an electric or hybrid SUV, but the reverse is forbidden. Amperage, dated Belgian prices and a case by case table.

Yes, a car jump starter also revives an electric or hybrid SUV: these models keep a 12 volt battery that goes flat like any other. The reverse is almost always forbidden, and your electric car must not rescue the neighbour's. Budget 55 to 150 € in Belgium.

Can a jump starter start an electric SUV?

Yes. An electric SUV has two batteries. The big one, at around 350 volts, moves the car. The small one, at 12 volts, powers the on-board electronics and engages the first. When it is empty, the screen stays black and nothing moves, even with 80% of range in reserve.

This is not a rare case. In 2025, the ADAC (the German automobile club) attended 50,445 electric cars in Germany, and the starter battery was at fault in about half of the cases, according to the figures published on 10 March 2026 (in German). Across all vehicles, its share reached 45.4%. Going electric has fixed nothing on that front.

The Tesla Model Y manual (Belgian edition, in French) describes the operation with an external low voltage supply, "for example a portable jump starter". That is exactly what a jump starter is.

Can you rescue another car with your electric SUV?

No, unless your manual allows it in so many words. The ADAC sums it up in one sentence quoted by Auto Motor und Sport (in German): receiving help is mostly allowed on an electric car, giving it generally is not. The 12 volt battery of these cars is small, because it has no starter motor to feed, and a wiring mistake can destroy a control unit.

Which amperage for which car?

The figure printed large on the box is a peak current, held for a fraction of a second. Four lines of the data sheet say more:

  • the maximum petrol and diesel displacement, to be set against the largest combustion engine in the household;
  • the cranking current, when the manufacturer gives it on top of the peak;
  • protection against reverse polarity and short circuit;
  • cable length, from 10 to 43 cm on the models surveyed, which matters when the terminals are buried under a cover.

A household with a single electric SUV only needs the smallest model. With a 2.0 l diesel beside it, aim for a sheet that states at least 3.0 l diesel.

How much does a jump starter cost in Belgium?

From 55 to 150 €. Survey of 9 October 2026 on the Auto5 product pages, completed by the Osram data sheet for technical comparison.

Two findings. With 1,000 A of peak current claimed on both sides, NOCO promises 6.0 l petrol and Norauto 5.0 l, which shows that peak figures do not compare from one brand to the next. And the retailer weighs more than the model: the same NOCO GB40 stood at 99.99 € at Auto5, on promotion from 7 October to 29 November, at 107.81 € at Galaxus and at 139.00 € at Gamma.

The number that counts: a 39 € gap on the same day for an identical product.

We have tested none of these jump starters. One reading note, all the same: the Emergency Start page mentions a supercapacitor in its highlights and a 0 Ah "lithium battery" in its specifications. Ask in store before paying 149.95 €.

How do you connect a jump starter without damaging anything?

  1. Open the manual at the emergency start page. On an electric car, the 12 V terminals are often hidden: under a panel in the front boot on the Model Y.
  2. Red clamp on the positive terminal, without touching any other metal part.
  3. Black clamp on the earth point designated by the manufacturer.
  4. Switch the jump starter on, then start the car or wake the screen. On the Model Y, Tesla warns that this can take a few minutes.
  5. Disconnect starting with the black clamp.

The car does not respond? Do not insist. Lorenzo Stefani, spokesman for Touring (the Belgian roadside assistance organisation), made the point in L'Avenir on 21 January 2024 (in French): the cause may lie elsewhere, and the 12 volt battery of an electric car is often harder to reach than that of a combustion car.

Does a lithium jump starter cope with winter in the boot?

Badly. The ADAC measured seven lithium jump starters (in German) at +55, +20, 0 and -20 °C: none delivered its claimed power at -18 °C, only one at 0 °C, and three were marked down because their casing melted under short circuit. The test dates from January 2016; the models have changed, the chemistry has not. The club recommends storage at room temperature. So keep the jump starter in the hallway from November to March rather than in the boot, since the cold that weakens the 12 volt battery and cuts the range of an electric SUV is the same cold that robs the jump starter of part of its power at the very moment you need it.

A jump starter is not compulsory equipment

The Belgian police (in French) list the triangle, the fire extinguisher and the first aid kit, plus the high visibility vest to put on if you leave the car where stopping is prohibited. No jump starter on the list, and the rule is the same in Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders.

When should you buy nothing?

You have roadside assistance included with the car or the insurance, and the vehicle rarely sits more than a fortnight without being driven, the period Touring associates with battery failures: move on. Same verdict if the battery has already failed several times. It lasts about five years according to Touring, which counts a million replacements a year for nearly six million vehicles in Belgium, and a jump starter does not make it younger.

It earns its place in three situations: a second car that is rarely driven, a holiday far from any breakdown service, a household that mixes electric and diesel. It then joins the charging cable among the few accessories an electric SUV justifies. And to choose the car itself, the comparison tool remains the right starting point.
