Dacia Duster
The cheapest SUV, full stopFrom €19,690, simple proven mechanicals, economical Eco-G LPG version. The best space per euro on the market.
An affordable SUV is not necessarily a bargain-bin SUV. We rank by entry list price (VAT incl.), flagging the compromises to watch (safety, engine). Under €26,000, a few models offer real volume without wrecking the budget.

Below €22,000, the Belgian new-SUV market comes down to a few clever players. Dacia reigns supreme with the Duster, able to offer real volume and simple mechanicals for the price of a well-equipped city car. It is, to date, the most radical proposition: maximum space for minimum euros, with a very economical Eco-G LPG version as a bonus.
Around €20,000 to €26,000, you also find small urban SUVs (C3 Aircross, Bayon, Fiat 600) and hybrid compacts (MG ZS, Captur) that suit a family of two or three perfectly. Beyond that, towards €27,000-30,000, you reach larger, better-engined SUVs, but you leave “cheap” territory.
The headline price sometimes hides compromises that weigh day to day: manual air conditioning, no cruise control, steel wheels, and above all safety equipment as options. Always check the standard kit — automatic emergency braking, driver aids, number of Isofix points — before getting carried away by a rock-bottom price. A well-rated Euro NCAP SUV like the Hyundai Bayon beats a cheaper but less safe model.
Also beware of underpowered engines: a small naturally aspirated petrol can struggle with a family and luggage, especially uphill or on the motorway, and end up using more than a better-sized unit. The hybrid version, slightly pricier to buy, quickly pays off for intensive urban use. The real bargain is the entry version that is properly equipped, not necessarily the cheapest on paper.
