Ranking 01 · 2026

Largest boot

Boot space is the first criterion of a family SUV. We rank by manufacturer volume with seats up: the volume you actually use daily, not the “up to the roof” seats-down figure. Large 7-seat SUVs lead, followed by compact family models.

Our analysis

Advertised boot vs real boot

Manufacturers love to quote the “seats folded, up to the roof” figure, a spectacular but misleading number: it often exceeds 1,800 or 2,000 litres and says nothing about the daily life of a family travelling with everyone on board. The only figure that truly matters is the boot with seats up — the one that must hold the pushchair, the bag and the groceries at the same time.

It is this usable volume, measured to the VDA standard, that we use for this ranking. Height under the parcel shelf, width between the wheel arches and a low loading lip matter as much as raw litres: a well-shaped 600-litre boot can be more practical than a sloping 650-litre one.

Large 7-seat SUV or compact family model?

Large 7-seat SUVs (5008, Kodiaq, Sorento) crush the competition on pure volume and add a third row as a bonus. The downside: a bulky footprint in town and a higher bill, both to buy and at the pump. They target large families or those who carry a lot.

The compact family SUV (Tiguan, RAV4) offers the best compromise between volume, driving pleasure and consumption: a 580-to-650-litre boot is plenty for a family of four, in an easier-to-park format. The right choice mainly depends on how many passengers you carry regularly and your terrain, city or long trips.

FAQ

Largest boot

Which SUV has the largest boot in Belgium?

The Peugeot 5008 (916 L) and Škoda Kodiaq (910 L) lead with seats up, ahead of the VW Tayron (850 L) and Kia Sorento (813 L). Seats folded, these large SUVs exceed 1,900 L.

Should I look at boot space seats up or seats down?

Seats up: that is the volume you actually use daily with the whole family on board. The “seats down” figure only matters for an occasional move and artificially inflates comparisons.

Does a large SUV necessarily use more fuel?

Not always: weight, aerodynamics and the powertrain are what drive consumption. A large hybrid SUV like the RAV4 stays frugal in town despite its size, while a heavy petrol SUV uses noticeably more on the motorway.

Is the boot enough for a holiday for five?

With 580 L or more, yes, provided you organise loading: soft luggage, heavy items at the bottom, roof bars for the overflow. On a large 7-seat SUV used as a 7-seater, the remaining boot often drops below 250 L: plan for a roof box.
