Peugeot 5008
The king of modular volume916 L in 5-seat mode and three genuine seats at the back. The benchmark versatile large family SUV.
Boot space is the first criterion of a family SUV. We rank by manufacturer volume with seats up: the volume you actually use daily, not the “up to the roof” seats-down figure. Large 7-seat SUVs lead, followed by compact family models.
Manufacturer volume seats up (VDA)
Ranked by manufacturer volume seats up (vda). Indicative figures, updated June 2026.
Indicative manufacturer figures (Belgium), entry version without options. VDA boot volumes with seats up; electric ranges estimated in real mixed use (not WLTP). Verify with the dealer before purchase.
Manufacturers love to quote the “seats folded, up to the roof” figure, a spectacular but misleading number: it often exceeds 1,800 or 2,000 litres and says nothing about the daily life of a family travelling with everyone on board. The only figure that truly matters is the boot with seats up — the one that must hold the pushchair, the bag and the groceries at the same time.
It is this usable volume, measured to the VDA standard, that we use for this ranking. Height under the parcel shelf, width between the wheel arches and a low loading lip matter as much as raw litres: a well-shaped 600-litre boot can be more practical than a sloping 650-litre one.
Large 7-seat SUVs (5008, Kodiaq, Sorento) crush the competition on pure volume and add a third row as a bonus. The downside: a bulky footprint in town and a higher bill, both to buy and at the pump. They target large families or those who carry a lot.
The compact family SUV (Tiguan, RAV4) offers the best compromise between volume, driving pleasure and consumption: a 580-to-650-litre boot is plenty for a family of four, in an easier-to-park format. The right choice mainly depends on how many passengers you carry regularly and your terrain, city or long trips.
